MB Deal of the Week: Gucci Tiger Scarf

MB Deal of the Week: Gucci Tiger Scarf

We've been smitten by this Gucci tiger scarf since we first discovered it in October, 2020.

But at $594 it was too much for a fabric-based accessory — especially one with ever-decreasing wearing opportunities — so we added it to our price tracking app with the hope of future discount alerts.

Maybe it's a little too MB Bold Play for most, or maybe it's just really ugly to most, but over the past year it's stayed in stock and has gone from merely aspirational to MB Deal of the Week. Here's its journey:

= Aspirational
= Attainable
= Acquisitional

Date Price
10/30/2020 $594
1/26/2021 $475
6/1/2021 $415
7/2/2021 $295
9/3/2021 $237
9/10/2021 $178

As for the scarf itself? About what you would expect from Gucci: fantastic.

MB Deal of the Week: The Kooples Stay-at-Home Sweatshirts

MB Deal of the Week: The Kooples Stay-at-Home Sweatshirts

We admit. The Kooples closed us. First it was 50-60% off. Then an additional 20%. Then a bump to an additional 25%.

That was the trigger for us to load up on their sweatshirts: three with stripes perfect for Zoom calls and staring blankly into the fridge, and one camo perhaps best for social long-distancing.

Clockwise from top left:

Grey Crewneck w/ Tri-Color Ribbing. $215 $64.50.

Round Neck Grey Cotton Sweatshirt w/ Stripe. $215 $81.75.

Blue Cotton Sweatshirt Camoflague Print. $218 $65.40.

Round Neck Blue Cotton Sweatshirt w/ Stripe. $215 $81.75.

As for fit, the camo fits true to size. The striped sweatshirts fit small, so go up one. As for comfort, the camo is just OK. The striped sweatshirts are perhaps the most comfortable we've ever owned.

MB Deal of the Year: Leather Rabbit Fur-Lined Fratelli Orsini Gloves

Men's Italian Rabbit Fur Gloves By Fratelli Orsini via Leather Gloves Online, $85.95
Men's Italian Rabbit Fur Gloves By Fratelli Orsini via Leather Gloves Online. $85.95.

We've written about these fantastic gloves four times over the past dozen years (which is a lot since we post about quarterly). When we get around to publishing the MB Hall of Fame they'll be an original member. And now, thanks to a price-drop notification from our price-tracking app (still in alpha) they're just $85.95. Since 2012 we haven't paid a dime less than $125. Buy them; you'll love them.

If, like at least one reader, you're concerned about whether rabbits have suffered in these gloves' production, they have. But if it makes you feel any better, we learned from Fratelli Orsini they provide Gauls nutritional value before being turned into ridiculously luxe and cozy glove lining: "...the rabbit fur comes from either France or Belgium where rabbits are used as a food source and therefore the pelts are used for gloves and other garments."

MB Deal of the Week: American Trench Merino Activity Socks

Activity Socks. Regular price: $19.50. Now 15% off.
Activity Socks. Regular price: $19.50. Now 15% off.

Way back in April the New York Times endorsed American Trench's Silver Crew Socks, noting AT's colorful upgrade to military socks, which are normally limited to "drab olive and other camouflage tones."

They're fine socks. They're even true military spec — which means Donald Trump won't visit them in a war zone — but we believe American Trench makes better socks. In fact, we believe they make perhaps the best socks: The Merino Activity Socks with Silver.

61% wool and 1% silver, which is enough to keep away the stinky microbes, but not enough to trigger a TSA pat-down screening. And they're not kidding about "activity"! They're the sporty sock equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife. We've used them for lumberjacking, cycling, tennis, golf (alongside pants), and even poolside DJing (alongside shorts and high-tops). They're awesome for just lying around, too, especially when when temps are in brown liquor territory.

Why did we wait until Cyber Monday to tell you about them? Two reasons: One, they were out of stock on most of the colorways for most of 2018. Two, they weren't on sale until now: 15% off until 11:59 PST Monday, November 26.

MB Deal of the Week: Kit and Ace Polo Shirts

MB Deal of the Week: Kit and Ace Polo Shirts

About this time a year ago, "luxury athlesiure" company Kit and Ace closed all its US stores to focus on online retail.

But let's face it — bricks and mortar, online, it doesn't matter. In Donald Trump's America, where employment is at record highs, and coal-miners and factory workers alike are working overtime so they can buy more Berkshire Hathaway shares, no one has time "luxury athleisure." There are capital gains to be had!

So now K&A stuff is showing up on Century 21 at 85% off.

While most of it doesn't fit our aesthetic, their Crossover Polo is an interesting twist on a classic. Made from 10% cashmere, it reminds us of our own Cashmarello Easy Shirt — except that at $15 a pop, you can get 16 for what you would have had to pay for an Easy Shirt! (Not to mention that even if you have the $250 we charged for an Easy Shirt, you can't get one — as we sold out of them long ago.)

It's perhaps the most comfortable polo we've ever worn. Fits true to size.

Ask the MB: YOOX 8 Shoes

8 Sneakers via YOOX, $89.00
8 Sneakers via YOOX. $89.00.

Q: You've been a big fan of "8" brand clothing over at Yoox, and I agree it's great bang for ze buck. But what do you know about their shoes? Kind of digging these sneakers. Might be hard to pass on for $100.
—Joe

A: While we don't have as much experience with 8 shoes as 8 clothes, yes they seem equivalent in terms of bang for the buck. Two years ago we recommended these 8 Denim Sneakers as an MB Deal of the Week and we'd recommend them all over again if they were still in stock.

As for those joggers, they're now marked down to $89 and you better grab them before we do.

Side note: We've long suspected that 8 was the YOOX in-house brand, and despite a flat-out denial from Omar from Customer Service, we can confirm that 8 is in fact a trademark of YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP S.P.A., serial number 79186766.

(This fact should not diminish in the slightest enthusiasm for 8 stuff.)

MB Deal of the Week: Saturdays Surf NYC 'Bowery' Sweatshirt

Grey Heather Bowery Sweatshirt via Totokaelo, $49.00
Grey Heather Bowery Sweatshirt via Totokaelo. $49.00.

We stalk TOTOKAELO for deals on Martin Margiela cardigans and Ann Demeulemeester longline tanks, but have unearthed great value on a plain old sweatshirt.

Now, you might be wondering: How many plain old sweatshirts does one man really need? Well, let's see. If you're like us, you need one for sitting around. Then, you also need one for sitting around drinking. Then, there's sitting around drinking and watching sports.

In short, if you share our very active sitting-around lifestyle, you'll need a full complement of plain old sweatshirts.

Which brings us to Saturdays Surf NYC's sweatshirt collection. For us, it's right up there with the best of them. Available in grey, navy, or black, they're $49 plus free shipping. (FYI, more sizes are also on sale straight from the source.) If you opt for the navy or black pullover hoodies, they're only $32.40. Fits true to size. You will not be disappointed.

MB Deal of the Week: Alex Mill Plaid Shirts

MB Deal of the Week: Alex Mill Plaid Shirts

We're always on the lookout for uncommon plaids to put into the rotation with ginghams under solid blazers, cardigans, and the rare crew. Throw in a point collar — which is practically on the endangered species list — and we're usually sold, even at full boat.

We've had our eyes on these two Alex Mill examples for months, but based on the wide range of sizes available, wagered on waiting until Barney's Warehouse decided to blow them out, as they are now: originally $155, reduced to $47.40 with free shipping. All sales are final but these fit true to size.

MB Deal of the Week: 8 Denim Sneakers

8 Denim Sneakers via YOOX, $56.00
8 Denim Sneakers via YOOX. $56.00.

Several years ago we claimed Italian brand 8's cashmere sweaters to be the best cashmere value in the world. It's still true. Now, at just $56, we can confidently claim these 8 low-tops are the best denim sneaker value in the world.

Made in the same factory in the Marche region of Italy as MB favorite Hydrogen 1, they share the same minimalist style, high-quality construction, and comfort. Originally $183. Available in sizes 8-13. Fits true to size. Highly recommended.

MB Deal of the Week: Henry Cotton's Madras Blazer

Henry Cotton's Madras Blazer via YOOX, $67.00
Henry Cotton's Madras Blazer via YOOX. $67.00.

On September 9, at 45° N, the wearing window for an unlined madras blazer is barely open wide enough for a mosquito to pass through. But if you are in lower latitudes, the southern hemisphere, or just want to prep for spring 2016, we recommend this Henry Cotton's slim fit version.

Because it is madras, yes, it is partially linen. But cotton retains a controlling 55% stake. Functional buttonholes. Proper ball-sack length. Perfectly proportioned lapels. Originally $309, marked down to $67, and with the 20% discount code FRIENDS this statement piece is just 53 bucks. (Order up a size, and if you're on the fence, two. Discount code valid through 9/13.)

MB Deal of the Week: Neiman Marcus PJ Combo

Plaid Two-Piece Pajama Set via Neiman Marcus, $56.00
Plaid Two-Piece Pajama Set via Neiman Marcus. $56.00.

Some people say they'll sleep when they're dead. If you ask us, that's setting a pretty high barrier to entry for one of life's most consistent pleasures. So we'll sleep when we're fed. In fact, we work intermittently, we play languidly, but we sleep hard, night after night. And that means we're always on the lookout for a new pair of pajamas. Like this mixed set from Neiman Marcus, which offers just enough plaid, and just enough not-plaid, to keep us happy. On sale now for just $56, it's one deal you should absolutely sleep on.

MB Deal of the Week: Brooklyn Tailors White Denim Pants

MB Deal of the Week: Brooklyn Tailors White Denim Pants

With the Cardinals 3-0 win over the Cubs on April 2nd, white pants season officially started. For us they're already on a rotation heavier than a starting pitcher, and with a life expectancy about as long as a doubleheader, we're always looking to stock the bullpen.

Three strikes and we're out?

Yes. But let us first present the MB Deal of the Week: Brooklyn Tailors White Denim Pants. Originally $205, marked down to $69, and now just $34.50 (+ free shipping) these pants are made in BkT's Kathmandu, Nepal factory, where they're usually busy making suits and dress shirts. So we expect a more tailored construction, and paired with the countervailing force of denim, a switch-hitting pant we can wear to both the office and a matinee.

MB Deal of the Week: Tretorn T56 GTOs

MB Deal of the Week: Tretorn T56 GTOs
Does Sweden still have an army? Yes, apparently, and according to Wikipedia, it's currently around 2160 soldiers strong. We found a picture and suspect these troops may be doubling as Ikea salespeople, but that's not why we're delving into Swedish military history today.

We're doing so because the Tretorn T56 GTO, a washed leather version of a style that debuted in 1956 as a training shoe for Swedish infantrymen, is on sale at 6PM.com. For just $24 (regularly $80). Meaning you could shod the entire Swedish Army for just for just $51,840!

We don't think you could win a tetherball match in them, much less a war -- comfort-wise, 1956 shoe technology leaves much to be desired. But if you're looking for a "new classic" alternative to the ubiquitous Chuck Taylor, these fill the bill nicely.

UPDATE: That super-deep discount is temporarily suspended; now they're $48 a pair. A decent price, but unless the Swedish Army decides to make a run on them, we're pretty sure they'll be back down to $24 eventually. Hold your fire until then.

Following the Spiewak outerwear tip, I dug up some crazy deals at 6pm.com. Including that snorkel parka at $80.50! Now the dilemma is *which one*?!? (or, at those prices, two?)
--Andy

A: Unless you live above 45° N, an MB only needs one snorkel parka. (Incidentally, we're at 44° N and change here in Pulaski, WI.) If you insist on buying two pieces of outerwear, make the 2nd one this McClary Field Jacket in charcoal.
